The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste National Day, 20 May

The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, commonly known as East Timor, is a sovereign state located in Southeast Asia on the southernmost edge of the Indonesian archipelago, northwest of Australia. The country includes the eastern half of Timor Island, as well as the Oecussi enclave in the northwest portion of Indonesian West Timor, and the islands of Atauro and Jaco.

The territory comprises an area of 15,007 sq. km. Timor-Leste gained international recognition of its independence on 20 May 2002, and became one of the newest countries in the 21st century and the 191 st member of the United Nations on 27 September 2002. The population of the country is highly concentrated in the area around the capital city of Dili.
